Saxon Harbor is surrounded by scenic natural views worth protecting. With a pebbled beach and forested campground adjacent to Lake Superior, the harbor’s marina has a diverse range of recreational opportunities for boaters.
To help maintain these environments, the marina and surrounding community have worked diligently to be recertified as a Wisconsin Clean Marina, demonstrating their sustained commitment to environmental protection.
“For Saxon Harbor, maintaining Clean Marina certification is important because it emphasizes environmental stewardship of Lake Superior, strengthens the harbor’s business attractiveness and reputation, mitigates risks and regulatory exposure, supports the local economy and tourism, and ties into the harbor’s infrastructure resilience and sustainability goals,” said Tara Krall, marina office manager.
When the marina was first certified in 2020, their bioretention areas, native plantings, and vegetated buffers stood out. These all help protect against erosion and flooding and prevent pollution from entering Lake Superior. Other best management practices include a fish cleaning station, fishing line recycling, and boater education and clean fueling practices.
“We would like to congratulate Saxon Harbor on their recertification and their dedication to clean and safe boating practices,” said Theresa Qualls, Clean Marina Program coordinator.
The Wisconsin Clean Marina Program was launched in 2010, and 26 Wisconsin marinas have since taken steps to voluntarily adopt practices to become certified. Marinas and related industries contribute more than $2.7 billion to Wisconsin’s economy. The Wisconsin Clean Marina Program is administered by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Program in partnership with the Wisconsin Marine Association, Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and Fund for Lake Michigan.
